Abstrakti

This article provides a new and original treatment of adverbial identification in prepositional structures in Albanian, according the generative perspective. In contrast with traditional grammar, where prepositional phrases have been defined as prepositional objects based on adverbial-question criterion, i.e. if the prepositional phrase can be the answer to an adverbial question, this study seeks to set up new criterias to distingush adverbials in Albanian syntax. Specifically, identification of the function of prepositional phrases here is based on three main criterias: a) facultativity, b) substitution, and c) thematic roles. Particularly, the article looks at the function of prepositional phrases in instrumental, locative, source, goal, motivation and comitative uses. The language data used for this study have been collected both in written texts and spoken Albanian. The results of this work show that not all traditional prepositional objects are truly objects. On the contrary, they behave like adverbials. Finally, this study calls for greater attention to the investigation of prepositional phrases in spoken language, alongside written language, in revising and updating our knowledge of Albanian syntax.
